Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)A tale of two gardensIn suburbia “This was an interesting project from the start,” says Lisa Lempsink, who devised this handsome front garden in Fife. “The house was designed by the architect Michael Laird and built in the early 1950s; it’s an unusual style of house and has a beautiful, tasteful interior.” The front garden, in contrast, was a complete blank canvas, with lots of open space and an oddly shaped lawn. Despite this, Lisa could see the potential for something special. “The clients wanted a low-maintenance garden with a relaxed feel and diffuse screening. Curves and fluid organic shapes were favoured. I did exactly that – something stylish and in keeping with the house, but wildlife-friendly.” She started by creating a perfect circle as the central feature, with the driveway curving around it.…6 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)BATHROOM NEWSStatement soak This modish bathroom is a brilliant mix of traditional and contemporary styles. A claw-foot tub would usually steal the show, but we’re loving the new Stucco tiles from Ca’ Pietra – shown here in blue on the walls. They’re plaster-effect, with a velvety finish, and would work well on the floor too. Pair with some playful art and a sculptural side table to double down on the cool vibes. £98 per sq.m. capietra.com BRUSH UP Upgrade your toothbrush with one of these beauties from Ordo. The Sonic Lite (shown here in mint green) is the most affordable model; it has 35,000 sonic pulses per minute and two bespoke brushing modes. The Sonic+ (in rose gold) has 40,000 sonic pulses per minute and four bespoke brushing modes. Both come…4 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)CASE STUDY HIP TO BE SQUAREBATHROOMS STYLE FILE BRIEF To transform a poky family bathroom in an Edwardian property into a large space with an emphasis on relaxation DESIGN Tom and Emma Lipop This bathroom is a peaceful retreat full of carefully chosen pieces. It’s part of a full home renovation in East London, which saw a small, sad bathroom transformed into an airy space fit for relaxation. The original modest bathroom was combined with an adjacent bedroom to create this more generous space. The owners, Tom and Emma Lipop, were inspired by the hammams they’d loved on trips to Istanbul; the public bathing spots often had tiled ceilings, and they were keen to incorporate this in their renovation. Simple tiles (the widely available Equipe Artisan in Ochre) cover the walls and accentuate the generous…3 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)ART NEWSCraft work London Craft Week 2024 promises to be an exciting affair, with this year’s event looking set to be bigger and busier than ever. The Future Icons Selects strand is certainly a look; the Oxo Tower Wharf’s industrial Bargehouse will be taken over by fifty artists, among them Sophie Ambelas. Her Millennial Amphora Era collection (pictured) draws on her Greek heritage and blends the ancient with the futuristic. 13 to 19 May. londoncraftweek.com DIVE IN In Nurture, her second exhibition at Edinburgh’s Ingleby Gallery, Caroline Walker has created a body of work that looks at the rhythms and everyday intimacies of family life. A good example is this oil painting, Daphne’s Swimming Lesson, which artfully brings alive a portrait of a mother watching her child in the water. You…3 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)STYLE & SUSTENANCEIt’s the sign of a good meal when your dining companion stops you mid-sentence, grabs your arm and closes her eyes to really savour the mouthful. For this fellow writer, and much greater foodie than me, it was the perfect melange of salty, tart and rich flavours that hit her palette. Fhior isn’t a new addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene (there have been so many lately, it’s hard to keep up) but it should be on your ‘must visit’ list. Chef-owner Scott Smith heads up the kitchen at the Broughton Street restaurant; a simple, Scandi-inspired spot decked out in pale wood with special attention given to all the little details (ceramics by Borja Moronta and Kari Ytterdal are worthy of a gallery plinth of their own). As well as…3 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)Escape WEDINBURGHEdinburgh is having a moment. Maybe it’s the Weegie in me and I’ve not allowed myself to admit it before, but the capital is looking mighty fine right now. The forthcoming redevelopment of the historic Jenners department store, the swish shopping district at Multrees Walk, the flourishing fine-dining scene; there’s no denying the city is buzzing. Netflix’s recent adaptation of the David Nicholls novel One Day has focused renewed attention on Edinburgh, too; the majestic Arthur’s Seat is almost a main character in its own right in the miniseries, and the Georgian architecture and cobbled streets serve up an unmistakable setting. Where better, then, to take in those cinematic views than atop the very latest addition to the skyline? W Edinburgh is the new kid on the block. And by…4 min
Homes & Interiors Scotland|May - June 2024 (154)LITTLE EDENWe’ve known about the healing properties of water for centuries. The act of bathing in streams, lochs and rivers can provide peace or exhilaration – or a mixture of the two. Just ask your wild-swimming pals. That instant magic, plus the sublime scenery, of course, is what draws many to Loch Lomond every year. Outside the village of Balmaha on the eastern shore is an ancient holy well, St Maha’s Well, named after an 8thcentury widow who preached the gospel in Scotland; legend has it that this was a place of healing for the local community. Hundreds still visit to dip in the water and reset their equilibrium. Ironically, it was through the smirr and drizzle of a wet April morning that I found myself on a drive to the…4 min
