All You Need to Know About
Trash Services Upper Macungie Township
Make sure to put your UMT trash & recycle carts curbside for collection the night before your pick up day.
As a reminder, any trash placed outside your cart will not be collected. However, you can purchase another cart.
- UMT carts must be used.
- Your carts should be at least 3 feet clear of any other objects including other carts, mailboxes, cars, street signs, etc.
- Wheels on your cart should be toward the house so that all materials are emptied.
- Be sure trash is bagged and lids are closed to prevent spills.
We cannot take:
- Hazardous waste including radioactive, reactive, toxic, ignitable, corrosive, or acidic items.
- E-waste including televisions, computers, etc.

Additional Cart Order
Any residence may order a 2nd trash or recycling cart (maximum 2 of each cart per residence) at the Township Building.
There is no additional monthly cost for a 2nd cart.
If you are unable to pick up a cart, you may send in a check payable to UMT, along with a completed form.
The Township will not exchange used trash carts or recycle carts for new ones.
Carts remain property of the Township.

Bulk services
Large Items
Bulk Service
Bulk waste will be collected on the regular collection day, and limited to one (1) item per week with restriction that the size and weight may be reasonably to lifted by two persons.
- All bulk items should be scheduled in advance. Items not scheduled with enough notice will be picked up the following week.
BULK WASTE STICKERS
- Can be purchased at the Municipal Township building for a fee for additional waste
- Debris pile shall be no larger than four 4’x4’x6′
- A maximum of four (4) stickers per calendar year
Mattresses and Toilets
For our employees’ safety:
- Mattresses and box springs must be wrapped in plastic.
- Toilets must be bagged.
White Goods Collection
Freezer, Refrigerator, Stove, Air conditioner, Dishwasher, Dehumidifier, Water Softener:
- Residents must schedule removal in advance.
- All doors must be removed.

Recycling Services
Place clean loose recycling in your yellow lidded recycle cart.
If your recycling is contaminated, or includes items that are not acceptable according to the list below, they will be rejected.
Acceptable Items
All bottles and containers must be rinsed clean and dry.
Dirty recycling is contaminated recycling.
Shredded paper cannot be recycle.It clogs the recycling sorting line.
If paper is soiled or wet, compost or trash it.
Must be broken down.
If cardboard is soiled, compost or trash it.
Make sure containers are rinsed out and completely empty to avoid contamination.

Unacceptable Items
Plastic bags are not accepted as part of curbside recycling programs – they get tangled in equipment and threaten worker safety.
Plastic bags can be recycled at most grocery stores.
Plastic wrap, bubble wrap, sandwich bags and freezer bags should not go in the recycle bin.
Reuse whenever possible for presents, moving, or storage of similar items, or look for local options to recycle.
Flexible packaging like chip bags and juice or soup pouches cannot be recycled in curbside programs.
This type of packaging is made from multiple materials preventing it from being recycled.
Food and yard was cannot be recycled through our curbside program.
Compost or utilize UMT’s yard waste program.
Polystyrene foam, plastic “to-go” containers and cups are made of non-recyclable materials, and are not acceptable in the curbside recycling program.
Packing peanuts aren’t recyclable either, however some shipping stores will take peanuts back for reuse.

Yard Waste and Leaves
The most environmentally correct way to dispose of yard waste is to utilize Upper Macungie’s yard waste programs.
For the convenience of their residents, Upper Macungie Township provides property owners with two ways to properly dispose of leaves and yard waste.
- Curbside Pick-Ups twice a year by the Public Works Department (generally May and October).
- Yard Waste Drop-Off Site is located on Grim Road, across from the Township Office Building.
Drop-off Site located on the corner or intersection of Schantz & Grim Roads, next to the Public Works garage.
DROP-OFF INSTRUCTIONS: Closed on observed UMT Holidays in addition to Federal Holidays. Please call 610-395-4892 if you are unsure of the hours.
- UMT residents may drop-off grass clippings, leaves, shrubs and small trees (including Christmas Trees).
- Shrubs and small trees no longer than 4 feet long and 5 inches wide are accepted.
- All waste must be removed from bags.
- Please remember that grass must be separated from other yard-waste.
Curbside pickups of yard-waste occur semi-annually, once in the Fall (October) and once in the Spring (May).
- Accepted Items-leaves from trees, garden residue, shrubbery trimmings, and tree trimmings.
- Limbs and branches tied and bundled to a maximum of 48″ x 18″ x 18″.
- If branches and limbs are not tied and bundled, they will not be picked up.
- NOPLASTIC BAGS, STONES, LUMBER, GRASS CLIPPINGS OR ROOTS WILL BE COLLECTED!
- Items improperly bagged or bundled will not be accepted.
- Leaf waste can be placed in open trash containers, no larger than 32 gallon capacity and less than 60 pounds.
- A combined maximum of six (6) bundles or containers per household will be collected.
- PLEASE PUT YOUR YARD-WASTE OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE PICK UP.
IF YOU MISSED THE PICK-UP DATE: Yard-wastes may be deposited at the UMT Yard Waste Drop-off Site.
Residents can drop off Christmas trees at the UMT Yard Waste Drop off site on Grim Road, across from the Township Office Building.
Curbside Christmas tree pick up will be the day after your regular refuse pick-up day beginning 1/8/24 – 1/25/24 (3 weeks).
