The only armed folks I've seen in the Fairfax VA courthouse are the sheriff deputies who are responsible for security. It does seem strange to see troopers with empty holsters. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ That's very sad to hear, but considering the state your talking about it's par for the course. I hope that the rest of the country doesn't use VA as the example. |

When i worked in uniforn, i wore it in a body armor holster, and it was covered by my arm, all i had to do was pull down on my shirt zipper, which i later changed to velcro, due to the possibility of a mechanical zipper failure. |

Only you didn't do what the clerk told you to do that he apparently didn't have any authority to tell you to do. Maybe it's like a local cop who told some teenage female to undress for an examination. She complied. He got canned. And the city's going to get to cough up some bucks. Seems like it would be dangerous to have a gun within an enclosure where you are outnumbered by people who might have a vested interest in taking it away from you. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When i go inside a jail to talk to a prisoner, the prisoner is brought up from his cell. It depends upon the security risk or violence risk of the prisoner, the lower risking ones are handcuffed, the higher risking ones are handcuffed and shackled. I go into an interview room and talk to them. In most facilities unless, your a trustee and are allowed to work within the facility, and roam without immediate direct supervision, your in your cell block and don't leave that cellblock without an escourt. I don't go into the cell blocks and talk to these folks. I also pat them down, for weapons, shanks etc. even though their cuffed and have been searched prior to me. |

I remember one rather powerfully built black dude who was in for strangling his wife to death. It was a little freaky. I was unarmed, except for a 2.75" lock blade on my key chain. Yeah, I had about ten years of Jiu-Jitsu at that time, and it was still pretty fresh (not to mention having previously been one of those men in white suits in the acute psych unit, wherein I had assisted in taking down some pretty hefty dudes), but I always thought I should have had some back up in those situations. |

But it's been a fun read this morning over coffee, especially Penny's photo post! To be serious for a moment: I don't think you handled the situation badly at all, and like Isaac and others have said, I'd give the recently-discharged Jarhead a chance to be a decent person next time you see him. But I would offer this comment: I have ample anecdotal evidence, and an awful lot of training that tells me you should NEVER reveal that you're carrying a concealed firearm to anyone except a LEO in the lawful execution of his/her duties. People I don't know really, really well, have no business knowing whether I carry, whether they work in gun stores or in the grocery store. I have even been known to resort to a slight subterfuge to avoid telling cops at a routine traffic stop that I'm carrying. I was once asked by a State Trooper in a state I do not reside in--but where my right to carry is covered both by my Florida CCW license and by HR 218--if I had any firearms in my vehicle. Since I always travel with a long gun in the trunk of my car, I replied that I had a cased rifle in the trunk. I told him the truth, but only as much as he needed to know. I didn't mention the 1911 on my belt nor the BUG in my pocket. The trooper asked me to open the trunk and the rifle case (which is within the scope of his duties, to ascertain that firearms are transported according to statute), satisfied himself that the rifle was indeed unloaded. He then asked me if I had any other weapons in the vehicle. Since I was standing with him outside the vehicle, I declared that there were no other firearms in the vehicle. I was sent on my way with a warning ticket for my faulty tail-light. The trooper and I left with a smile and a wave, on good terms. I'm sure that the vast majority of troopers in that state would have had no problem with my concealed handguns, but I'm also sure that there are some who would have had a problem, and it could have led to an ugly escalation. I offer this example not as a testimony to my craftiness (I'm not crafty, I'd just thought this situation out ahead of time) but as an example of how NOT saying you're armed can avoid a whole lot of hassle. Same reason I don't carry openly in my home state, even though it is by statute an open carry state. Try carrying a handgun openly in downtown Madison, though, and see how far your right to carry goes! I know of at least one case in AZ (also an open-carry state) where a citizen carrying a sidearm was selected for elimination by armed gunmen in the course of a robbery. Don't ask, and don't ever tell. That's the policy of a lot of very switched-on people. "I'm gonna have to science the schit out of this." Mark Watney, Sol 59, Mars |
